UPDATE 7.15PM: Telstra expects the outage to be fixed by 9pm.
4.30PM: Thousands of northern Illawarra homes have been without internet since this morning.
The outage, affecting about 5000 households between Scarborough and Russell Vale, started around 8am after a fibre cable was damaged by construction activity.
A Telstra spokesperson said technicians had been onsite since 9.45am, locating the damaged sections of the cable.
But because the damage was at a construction site, repairs were set to take longer than normal.
‘‘Our technicians are preparing to install a replacement cable and are working as quickly as they can to restore services for our customers,’’ she said.
‘‘We are sorry for the inconvenience.’’
A Scarborough resident, who did not want to be named, said he had been without internet connection since about 9pm last night.
He said black-outs to the phone line and internet happened quite often, particularly in wet weather.
‘‘It’s a real shock, it just shows me how much I actually use the internet,’’ he said.
‘‘I’m trying to use my smart phone to do things but it’s just very slow and useless.
‘‘I had a lot of work to do today so that’s all been placed on hold.’’
