Joshua Smits died at Vachira Hospital in Phuket City on Monday night, having suffered serious head injuries in the fall hours earlier.
Yesterday Mr Smits's sister Casey Rey said her family was unsure about some of the details contained in media reports about the tragedy, and had received no official account from Thai authorities.
Most of the information relayed to Mr Smits's relatives has come from reports on the tourism news site Phuket Wan.
Mrs Rey said the family had opted not to travel to Phuket after consulting embassy officials.
Mrs Rey welcomed a community fund-raising effort aimed at repatriating the body of Mr Smits, 24.
A Facebook page, Help Bring Joshy Home, has been set up for supporters of Mr Smits's parents, Liz and John, which Mrs Rey said was appreciated by the family.
Vachira Hospital attributed Mr Smits's death to a heart attack, according to his family.
