At 12.15pm on Friday, Lake Illawarra police were called to a home in Koona Street by other emergency services personnel after a woman had been found with serious burns.
Police claim she was covered in an accelerant which caught fire as she was standing near an open fire.
The woman was treated at the scene and then airlifted to the Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.
She remains in hospital and was expected to undergo surgery for burns to her arms, chest and stomach.
A hospital spokeswoman said yesterday that her condition had gone from critical to serious, but she was now stable.
On Saturday afternoon a 17-year-old male attended Lake Illawarra police station and was arrested over the incident.
He was charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.
His case appeared before a closed session of Parramatta Children’s Court yesterday morning.
