Federal Labor MPs Sharon Bird and Stephen Jones launched a petition against the proposal that people pay a fee to visit a GP on Tuesday.

The Illawarra-based MPs said affordable and accessible health care could be under threat from the Abbott government.

"We want to make sure that Medicare survives ... and that the historic Labor initiative is not abolished by stealth," they said in a joint statement.

The MPs for Cunningham and Throsby launched the petition in Wollongong.
