Police allege Dominic Angelucci hid a Logitech boom bass down the front of his pants and tried to leave Harvey Norman Warrawong without paying on February 20.
When security alarms sounded, the father of four allegedly claimed he had a security tag in his wallet that was accidentally setting off the device, police said.
After activating the alarm twice more he removed the box from his pants and left the store.
He was arrested and charged with larceny at the weekend.
Yesterday, Wollongong Local Court heard the 34-year-old had a history of dishonesty offences and was on bail for a separate theft.
On that occasion Angelucci allegedly stole an item from JB Hi-Fi by hiding it in his child's pram.
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie refused him bail, saying the alleged theft was the latest in a string of similar offences.
He will reappear in court on March 26.
