Police said that at 1.30am on Saturday, two men were walking west along Fowlers Road when a car - described as a dark blue or green coloured Hyundai Getz drove past in the opposite direction.
The wing mirror of the car hit the 26-year-old pedestrian, causing it to snap off.
The driver of the car then made a U-turn and drove towards the men.
The 26-year-old took evasive action to avoid being run over but was hit by the other wing mirror, which also snapped off.
The Hyundai then stopped and two men got out and assaulted the 26-year-old, wrestling him to the ground.
The pair then fled west along Fowlers Road in the car.
The injured man went to Wollongong Hospital where he received several stitches to a cut on his arm.
Lake Illawarra detectives are investigating the incident and are calling on the driver of the Hyundai to contact police.
