'Brazen': girls sexually assaulted in park

Two teenage girls have been sexually assaulted in a western Sydney park in the middle of the day by a group of men who earlier had struck up a conversation with them on a train, police say.

Detectives believe a person out walking their dog in Fairfield Park may have seen the three men, thought to be in their late teens and early 20s, who attacked the 16-year-old girls near a grandstand on Tuesday afternoon.

Inspector Stuart Cadden, from the Fairfield local area command, said the two teenage girls were believed to have met the men on a train at Blacktown at midday, before the group travelled together to Fairfield.

The group then walked to the nearby Fairfield Park on Ulverstone Street, before the girls were attacked between 1pm and 2pm.

‘‘At that location a number of sexual assaults have taken place between the three males and the two girls,’’ Inspector Cadden said.

He said the attacks occurred near a grandstand in the middle of the day, potentially within view of other people in the park.

‘‘We do know that a person walking a dog may have potentially seen something and we’re centreing our appeals this morning on identifying that person walking their dog, hoping they will come forward and talk to us,’’ Inspector Cadden said.

He said the men left the park following the attack and the teenagers phoned police.

They were taken to hospital for treatment, and had given statements to police, Inspector Cadden said.

‘‘They’re physically as good as they can be. Obviously they’re very shaken up. They are obviously going to have some further help for ongoing issues,’’ he said.

‘‘This is very brazen. It’s a very serious offence at any time of the day, or at any place. The fact that it has taken place in a public park in suburban Fairfield is of concern to us, for sure.’’

Detectives on Wednesday morning were doorknocking nearby homes and searching for CCTV footage of the attackers, who they described as being Middle Eastern in appearance.

One man is described as being about 19-21 years old, about 178 centimetres tall, with a dark complexion, a thin build and dark hair.

A second is about 175 centimetres tall, with a thin build and black hair.

The third male is described as being between 17-19 years old, with a medium build and about 175 centimetres tall.
