One priest for the Wollongong masses

The number of Masses at Illawarra Catholic churches will be cut due to an ageing priesthood and forecasts of growing Catholic populations in other parts of the Wollongong Diocese.

Sunday Masses at Wombarra will cease from April 27, along with one Mass at Corrimal and another at the Catholic church in Bulli.

Instead of three priests serving the churches, there will be one parish priest and a part-time assistant priest, with two weekend Masses per church, except for Wombarra.

Parish priest Father Ken Cafe said Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at Wombarra would still hold rosary prayers and Holy Communion on Mondays.

"It's sad, the people of Wombarra are a lovely little community," he said.

The move is part of a diocese-wide restructure, made after surveys of parishioners and growth prediction analysis in place such as West Dapto, Camden and Leppington.
