While neighbouring Shellharbour and Wollongong councils already broadcast meetings online, Kiama council is hoping to become the first council in Australia to deliver council meetings via videoconferencing and the National Broadband Network.
The council is looking to trial the videoconferencing of its public access sessions, which take place on the Monday evening before the ordinary council meetings, enabling people to make presentations to the council from remote locations.
The council's corporate and commercial services director, Chris Quigley, said the videoconferencing will be delivered via the Kiama Connect platform.
"As Kiama Council nears the completion of the NBN Digital Local Government Project, the final stage of the project [called Kiama Connect: Phase 3] is to deliver council meetings online," Mr Quigley said.
