A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said the man suffered broken ribs and neck pain.
Two other men were taken to Wollongong Hospital in stable conditions.
Witnesses said the bus was heading north when the southbound car turned right in front of it.
The bus was carrying about a dozen hockey players from Coffs Harbour who were in Wollongong for an over 45s tournament.
The crash caused Princes Highway traffic to bank up for almost a kilometre.
