A fundraising website went live on Monday to grant African refugee Tumezghi Tesfay his wish to join other refugees and migrants on a trip to Canberra to learn about Australian culture.

After the outpouring of community support since he was violently bashed, Mr Tesfay said he felt thankful and overwhelmed by the attention he has received.

The Illawarra Multicultural Services plan to take Mr Tesfay, 50 refugees and new migrants, and some staff on an overnight bus trip to Canberra towards the end of October.

IMS spokesman Steven Higson said he hoped to raise $10,000 for the trip.

‘‘The aim is to give Tumezghi Tesfay and others the chance to experience the positive and true nature of Australians,’’ he said.

‘‘On the whole we are a generous and caring culture and a visit to three of our finest attractions will demonstrate this.’’

The coach hire is estimated to cost $2200, accommodation and food will cost about $5400 while entry into the Questacon will cost about $1130.

The group also plans to travel to Parliament House and the War Memorial.

Other costs include about $610 for the 7 per cent commission to My Cause, and about $500 for miscellaneous expenses such as drinks and snacks.
