Radar Illawarra: the week's music news

The Walking Who have released the first taste of a new EP. Latest single ‘With Roses’ was released on their Soundcloud last week, paring back on the heavy psychedelic rhythms for a breezier, more 60s pop-influenced sound. “New EP coming soon,” the band tease.

‘In Half Light’ is the new album from electronic duo This Mess. Dreamy, hazy electronica and sputtering beats collide with hip-hop and soul inspired production and gorgeous female vocals. It is available at “name your price” on Bandcamp now.

Hockey Dad released debut EP ‘Dreamin’ last week, and have announced a national tour to celebrate. They will play two shows at Rad on August 3, one all ages and one 18+, and also have shows booked in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Shining Bird’s tour with Tiny Ruins finishes this weekend with gigs in Perth and Adelaide, and the band have also released a new video clip for ‘You Won’t Feel A Thing.’ Much of the filming was done in the Thirroul Beach Hotel, but cosmic images, vivid wallpapers and majestic nature shots all entwine for a quite trippy experience.

The Vanns and The Maze are two of the region’s most promising up-and-coming indie pop outfits, and they are teaming up for one big showcase of local music when they play the Standard Bowl in Darlinghurst on July 10. Formerly known as The Standard, the venue has recently undergone extensive renovation – meaning, they put in a whole bowling alley in the club. Bowling and bands? Sounds pretty good!

The HOPE 2014 suicide prevention fundraiser is on this Saturday. Massonics, Baby Machine, Soiled Earth and The Heapsgoods play alongside many others, raising money for Liefline, Catholicare and the West Street Centre. Get along to Dicey Riley’s from 3pm on Saturday.
