Pitt and Jolie pay cafe to close
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have paid the owners of a beach cafe in Europe thousands of dollars to close down for three months so they can shoot a film.
Pitt and Jolie are filming new project By The Sea at Mgarr ix-Xini on the island of Gozo in Malta, and they need unfettered access to a tiny pebble beach to shoot their scenes.
However, a beachside kiosk holds pride of place in the bay, so the millionaire stars have rented the entire cafe for the summer, reportedly paying owners Noel and Sandra Vella thousands of dollars in compensation for their lost profits.
Sandra says, ‘‘I’m not going to make as much had I remained open throughout these months, but at least I’m getting some form of compensation.’’
Paris Hilton dating new model
Socialite Paris Hilton appears to have split from boyfriend River Viiperi after she was photographed kissing a new man on the beach in Malibu, California.
The former reality TV star, 33, began dating model Viiperi in May, 2012 and last year, she even discussed plans to settle down with her toy boy lover, who is 11 years her junior, and start a family.
Then, just last week, during an appearance on U.S. TV news show Extra, she cooed about her toyboy lover, insisting their age difference meant nothing to them.
However, Hilton and Viiperi recently ended their relationship, according to TMZ.com, and the hotel heiress has since moved on to date a new model beau.
She was snapped enjoying a beach date with Ralph Lauren stud Josh Upshaw in Malibu on Sunday, during which they locked lips in front of the paparazzi.
Reports suggest Hilton and Upshaw, 28, met at a party in Hollywood last Thursday.
A source tells Eonline.com, ‘‘He’s so nice and sweet. He’s also a little older so that’s good for Paris.’’
Duchovny in hot water over beer ad
Actor David Duchovny has defended his decision to star in a new commercial promoting a beer from his family’s native Russia, insisting the ad is not a vote of support for the nation’s controversial President Vladimir Putin.
The former The X-Files star features in a new promo for Siberian Crown, in which the New York native muses about how different his life would be if he had been born in Russia. In the commercial, which emerged on YouTube.com on Friday, Duchovny says, ‘‘This (America) is the country where I was born and raised, but there’s another country, where I got my family name from. Sometimes I wonder, what if things turned out differently? What if I were Russian?’’
He goes on to contemplate what kind of profession he would have taken on, posing as an astronaut, a dance instructor and an ice hockey player, among other things.
However, the release of the ad sparked controversy as political tensions between the U.S. and Russian governments grow over the ongoing conflict in the Ukraine and the recent tragedy of the Malaysia Airlines plane, which was reportedly shot down over the country by pro-Russia separatists.
Now Duchovny has spoken out to insist the advertisement is just for beer - and has nothing to do with politics.A statement issued to TMZ.com reads: ‘‘I am proud of my Russian, Ukrainian, Scottish and Polish heritage as I am proud of my American heritage.
‘‘But being proud of one’s ancestry is not a political statement on any current government or public policies.’’
However, the actor accepts the timing of the promo’s release is unfortunate. He adds, ‘‘In retrospect, and in light of recent tragic events, I can now see the potential for misunderstanding and hope people will understand.’’
