Garvey punched Christopher Allan multiple times on the dance floor of the Hotel Illawarra on February 27 during a night out with Dragons teammates.
Magistrate Mark Richardson found that while Garvey had believed Mr Allan posed a threat to his safety, his actions in assaulting the 26-year-old were over the top.
Garvey will be sentenced at a later date.
