A man was allegedly seen defacing a public telephone box with a permanent marker at 2.45pm.
Police spoke to the 35-year-old and his bag was searched; it allegedly contained two knives and other items.
It is alleged the man became abusive towards police and was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he continued to be aggressive.
He was charged with malicious damage/graffiti, offensive implement, custody of a knife (5th offence), goods in custody, resist arrest, assault police and intimidation.
He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Friday.
