The head of the NSW Police fraud and cybercrime squad has urged people to look out for counterfeit cash after an increase in fake notes being reported to police last month.

Detective Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis said across the state police received 81 reports of fake money in August, while 41 were received in July.
Two fake $50 notes were handed over to a club in Warilla on August 19, while counterfeit $50 notes were also circulating throughout the Highlands and used used at a Moss Vale homewares shop, fast food outlets in Mittagong and a Bowral hotel.
In July, staff at a Kiama cafe discovered a fake $10 note in their daily takings when depositing them at the bank.
Detective Superintendent Katsogiannis said the notes police had seized wre from a range a denominations, but were mostly $50 and $100 notes.
He said fake banknotes made from paper would tear easily, while counterfeit cash made from plastic felt thicker than real money.
