But one new business starting out on a quest for success this month is a hair salon just up the road from the Piccadilly Centre called Allure Hair on Crown.
Daniella Pandevska, 20, finished her school-based apprenticeship two years ago and has had her own ideas about how a salon should be run since her mid-teens.
Ms Pandevska started the first month by donating $5 from every client to Kids with Cancer Foundation Australia.
She said one of the reasons she decided to start the business now was because her role model, Tanya Curran Brown, had so much faith in her.
While drawing on all that knowledge and expertise, Ms Pandevska still added her personal touch to it.
That includes offering privacy to women from cultures who who did not want their hair to be done in public.
"This is something I have wanted to do since I was 16," Ms Pandevska said.
"This was previously a hair salon but had been closed for two years. I saw it advertised and called the real estate."
Ms Pandevska has set up four hair stations and a beauty room for waxing and other services.
"I do want to expand," she said.
"It has been so good having Tanya help me with advice. I couldn't have done it without her."
Ms Brown said many of the 15 apprentices who had worked with her at Serendipity by Tanya at Unanderra had eventually gone on to open their own salons.
However, she warned that it's never easy.
Despite enjoying success the last 28 years, earlier on she encountered many failures and had to face many challenges along the way.
She said it was a hard market for someone so young.
"It is very easy to lose heart and get bitter if things don't happen," Ms Brown said.
"But there are things you can do and it is easy when you know. You have to have an eye of the tiger, get off your butt and go out and bring business in. When Daniella started up her salon and I said I would help her. She went around and offered free blow-drying for two to three weeks. She has the best stock and is starting it up by herself. And she has worked for well-known hairdressers around the Illawarra who have given her a wealth of experience."
Allure Hair is located on Crown St opposite Medical Convenient Chemist not too far down hill from the hospital.
Ms Pandevska said she had learned much since she started her apprenticeship at Hair Frenzy at 15 and finished at Serendipity two years ago before working in Corrimal at Salon Today. She is a former Illawarra Sports High student.
