Work on the $39 million station started in October 2013, when it was to be known as Shell Cove station.
After a drawn-out saga – which also saw the previous Labor government’s name of Flinders scrubbed out – the station was given the name of Shellharbour Junction last month.
The station will include CCTV cameras, lifts to the platforms and modern lighting.
There will also be a 105-space car park, bus bay, four ‘‘kiss and ride’’ spaces, taxi zone and bicycle racks.
‘‘Shellharbour Junction will serve the growing communities of Shellharbour, Shell Cove, Flinders and the surrounding suburbs, providing them with a modern station to connect with Sydney and the wider region,’’ Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said.
Kiama MP Gareth Ward said the new station would offer far more than the old Dunmore station it replaces.
‘‘The problem with Dunmore is that when the North Kiama Bypass was constructed it seriously curtailed access to the station,’’ Mr Ward said.
‘‘But more than that, with the development and growth in that area around Shell Cove and Flinders, having accessible public transport is essential and Dunmore was just too far from the population and the projected growth areas.’’
In addition, a new bus route - Premier Illawarra’s Number 52 - will run between the station and Flinders, via Shellharbour Village from November 24.
A transport department spokeswoman said there would be some minor changes to the timetable as a result of the inclusion of Shellharbour Junction.
Northbound, the 3.07pm weekday Nowra to Kiama service will depart all stations four minutes later and the 9.15pm Kiama to Wollongong service will leave one or two minutes later at stations between Kiama and Dapto, one minute earlier at Unanderra and Coniston and arrive at Wollongong at 9.55pm.
Southbound, the 4.52pm Bondi Junction to Kiama service will depart Coniston, Dapto and Shellharbour Junction one to two minutes earlier, while the 7.22pm Central to Kiama service will depart stations between Albion Park and Shellharbour Junction one to three minutes earlier.
