The 25-year-old man was riding along Cliff Rd near Belmore Basin around 10am when a driver unwittingly opened a car door into the cyclist's path.
Illawarra Ambulance district officer Terry Morrow said the cyclist collided with the top end of the door, which punctured his left upper chest cavity and ruptured his lung, but missed all of the arteries.
Ambulance officers treated the man at the scene, before he was transported to Wollongong Hospital.
He remained there in a stable condition last night.
