Firefighters and police arrived at the Kurraba Road clubhouse about 8.30pm to find the boat engulfed in flames.
Inspector Don Pescud from Fire and Rescue NSW said a crew from Thirroul attended and extinguished the fire.
President of Woonona Surf Life Saving Club Stacey Paddon said the boat was no longer in use, and had been sitting outside for several months.
‘‘It was one of our older boats. It was torched, completely burnt. It’s pretty much just ashes on the ground now,’’ Ms Paddon said.
‘‘We had just purchased a new surf boat, and moved the older one out of the club and along the club’s southern side.’’
Wollongong police crime manager, Detective Inspector Tim Beattie, said police were treating the fire as suspicious.
‘‘Police found a small fire outside the club, and the surf boat alight,’’ he said.
‘‘An investigation is under way, and we appeal for anyone with information to report it to police.’’
Information can be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Wollongong police on 4226 7899.
