The corpse was spotted on the sand and - later - floating on the water’s surface, not far from where a five metre-long whale carcass washed ashore in January.
Back then, the creature was buried at Fairy Meadow Beach above the high tide line, according to a spokeswoman for Wollongong City Council.
The spokeswoman could not say whether the January carcass and Wednesday’s were one and the same.
‘‘In accordance with National Parks & Wildlife protocol, Council has contacted [the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia] to investigate,’’ she said.
