Relatives found the 52-year-old woman dead at her Dorman Street home about 3.45pm on Monday.
Her body showed no obvious sign of injury.
Lake Illawarra detective Jim Wilson said police had not been able to rule out medical causes.
‘‘Police have not been able to establish a cause of death,’’ he said.
‘‘Further inquiries are being made by the forensic pathologist.’’
Results of a post-mortem examination are to be returned on Wednesday and are expected to aid the police investigation.
The Mercury understands the woman lived at the home with adult family members.
