Police said the 34-year-old, from Dapto, was driving alone west along Avondale Road in a silver Toyota Prado about 11.10pm on Thursday when his car left the road near the railway crossing.
It hit a power pole before crashing into a tree.
Nearby residents called emergency services and rushed to help the man, but he died at the scene.
Police established a crime scene while Endeavour Energy workers repaired the damaged pole and downed power lines.
