Councillors voted unanimously tonight to seek public feedback on the draft masterplan for the popular Stanwell Tops tourist destination, which attracts thousands of visitors to the city's northern suburbs each year.
The masterplan suggests the site's northern car park be regarded to a gentle slope to give disabled and elderly visitors better access to an upgraded toilet block.
Current traffic congestion and illegal bus movements turning into the site are proposed to be solved by installing a roundabout at the entry to the lookout, and providing extra bus parking along Lady Wakehurst Drive.
Northern suburbs activist Warwick Erwin repeated claims he made in the Mercury last week when addressing the council meeting tonight, saying he believed the plan could be better, especially in terms of traffic solutions.
"What about a traffic survey? Where are the traffic statistics?" he asked, saying the council had not planned for any growth of visitor numbers in the future.
"This current plan before you tonight on exhibition has parking for six coaches or mini-buses. That's the number seen on the site now.
"Where is the allowance for the future?"
However, Liberal councillor Leigh Colacino said everyone who was consulted on the plan and who attended council information sessions had stipulated they wanted the site to retain its "bald" character.
"If we're going to keep it Bald, it [the development] needs to remain as low-key as possible," he said.
"We can't build a massive car park up there."
Fellow Liberal councillor Michelle Blicavs suggested the council should seek funding for the upgrade through the State Government's tourism department, Destination NSW.
The Bald Hill plans are expected to be made public on the council's website from next week.
