The veteran horseman passed away in his sleep at his home in Conjola after a brave battle with cancer.
Murray trained for more than 50 years in the racing industry and will be widely remembered as a true gentleman of the sport.
He tasted Group 1 success on multiple occasions throughout a storied career.
Names like Elkalyn, Hussar's Command, Universal Prince, Victory Vein, Half Hennessy, Coniston Bluebird will forever be synonymous with the classy trainer.
Universal Prince was a four time Group 1 winner for Murray, winning the Spring Champions Stakes, Canterbury Guineas, AJC Australian Derby and Ranvet Stakes.
The news comes two days before the Illawarra Turf Club’s marquee Classic Day meeting on Friday.
The club will also host its Provincial Championships qualifier on the day, which Murray quinella’d last year with O’Reilly’s Revenge and Darci Magic.
It is expected the ITC will name the race in his honour later today.
He went on to win the inaugural Provincial series at Royal Randwick with Sure And Fast.
Murray is survived by wife Edie and his three children Brenda, Paul and Graeme.
