These are the thoughts of The Punters Show’s Brisbane expert John McLeod following Doomben Cup day.
McLeod was one of many punters who expected Artlee to feature prominently in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m).
But the Todd Willan-trained gelding drifted from $2.80 to $3.90 late in betting and punters were spot on as Artlee failed to finish his race with his usual gusto, running third behind Snippets Land.
“I think the trainer has lost him,” McLeod said.
“He was very much on the toe before the race, (jockey Michael Cahill) pushed him out of the barriers but he was pulling badly.
“He was gone in the first two or three hundred metres when he started to pull.”
While dubious about the remainder of Artlee’s preparation, McLeod suggested punters take a kind approach to assessing Falkenberg’s run in the Group 2 The Roses (2000m).
The Team Snowden-trained filly endured a rocky passage but still finished seventh, just 3.1 lengths behind winner Kebede.
“Falkenberg went very good. (She was) slow out of the barriers, had no luck in the straight and is one to follow for sure.”
