THE presence of rain in Melbourne means a testing track for the first meeting at Sandown Lakeside in 17 days this Saturday.
That’s the view of Melbourne form expert Darren Potter who is placing an emphasis on fit horses who are proven in the conditions for his Saturday set.
Sandown Lakeside was rated a Soft 5 on Thursday morning but a downgrade was expected later in the day.
“The rail is in the true position and the penetrometer read 5.6 on Thursday morning. The rain is falling in Melbourne today with more to come,” Potter said.
“The track is likely to be significantly rain affected. Fitness and handling the conditions will be the key.”
Sydneysiders woke up to a grey morning on Thursday but there has been no significant rain as of yet and Randwick remained officially rated a Good 4. The rail will be in the three-metre position on Saturday.
“There have been some showers around but nothing that looks to tip the track off the Good end of the scale,” NSW professional punter John Walter said.
“Hard fence will be off as usual with jockeys steering away from the inside in the straight.
“Certainly the best ground will be 5m to 9m off the inside and those just off pace with cover are most advantaged as a rule.”
