Later in the day he found a way to get 80 burgers to hungry volunteers.
When SES acting commissioner Greg Newton was told the Grill’d Wollongong owner wanted to provide free meals to his volunteers he passed the message on to the crew responsible for feeding them in the field.
A phone call was made and that evening while the restaurant was full or regular diners the Grill’d team still managed to prepare and deliver enough burgers and gluten free meals to the busy emergency workers.
Mr Markovski explained to diners what was happening and everyone was encouraging.
“We did a production line. They do such an amazing job. And they are all volunteers. It was humbling for me. I felt bad seeing how bad it was outside and knowing many of these volunteers haven’t been home for two days.”
“They came and gave us an SES banner to put outside Grill’d which was really nice. They were so happy. One of them even gave me a big hug. And our staff loved doing it.”
Further south Pom King and the team at Tongarra Thai cooked up food for hungry Albion Park crews.
