This time it was Valera’s best friend Keith Schreiber who would have blood on his hands.
In his initial statement to police over the murders of former mayor Frank Arkell and shopkeeper David O’Hearn, Valera mentioned that his father had physically abused him.
Then, just weeks before his trial, he said that over a 10-year period his dad had repeatedly raped him.
Jack Van Krevel's reputation for abuse became the main issue in Valera's murder trial. And it become the motive for his own death.
Friends and family defended Mr Van Krevel’s reputation, saying there was no truth to Valera’s claims. But none of it mattered, nothing could save him.
For Valera and Schreiber had built up a solid friendship by then – the two spent hours talking about the best way to dissect a body, how to keep people alive while torturing them, how to make them suffer, it later emerged.
They read books on Satanism and murder and killers. They told people they were into the occult.
In documents tendered to court during Schreiber’s trial, Valera’s mother said his sister Belinda Van Krevel told her she had offered Keith Schreiber $2000 and her car to kill Jack Van Krevel.
When Schreiber was arrested he also told police that during Valera's trial, Belinda had asked him if he would kill her father.
"I didn't know if she was serious," he said in his record of interview.
On August 17, the day before Mr Van Krevel was murdered, Belinda and Schreiber had organised to see Valera in jail.
The visit didn’t go ahead, but they spent time together. After leaving Schreiber, Belinda went home to her father's place.
Just after midnight Schreiber arrived at the house and slid open a side window.
He found an axe propped against the garage door.
A few minutes later he was standing above Jack Van Krevel with the axe in his hand saying, "you f...in' paedophile bastard. You'll never molest another kid again."
The first blows didn't kill Van Krevel. Schreiber turned on the light to get a better look then ran from the room looking for more weapons.
He came back with a fire poker.
He finished the killing, carved up the body with a knife. Belinda, who was in bed at the time, told journalists she had heard noises and got under the covers with her daughter.
She waited until the noises stopped, opened the bedroom door and, seeing blood in the hall, took her daughter on the 10 kilometre drive to Warilla Police Station to report the attack.
When Schreiber was arrested the next day, he told police he had killed Van Krevel for what he had done to Mark and Belinda.
In 2012, Schreiber was granted parole after serving a minimum 12 years’ jail.
However, he was sent back to jail later that year after it was found he could not adapt to normal community life and obey directions from his parole officer, which were conditions of his parole.
