Just because steel is purchased in Australia doesn’t mean it is made here. The downstream steel supply chain in Australia dictates where the steel comes from. The only way is for all levels of Govt to stipulate Australian made steel, not just fabricated or processed here. What really disappoints is Mike Baird bangs on about wanting to create jobs yet he puts thousand of people out of work by sending rail carriage orders overseas, and don't get me started on the the jobs lost by the Greyhound industry. I would love for an enterprising journo to look at the opportunity and social cost of paying welfare benefits to those that could have otherwise been employed by building rail carriages in Wollongong and Newcastle vs the money saved on the initial contract.
