An inner city apartment has been destroyed and and three police officers have been transported to hospital after a serious fire in Wollongong on Saturday night.

Emergency services were called to the fire near the corner of Crown and Harbour Streets about 8pm, where a flat in the 18-unit complex was found well alight.
Residents of the six units directly affected by the fire were quickly evacuated with no injuries.
However, according to NSW Ambulance Inspector Norm Rees, police officers who entered the building to check for occupants suffered serious injuries from smoke inhalation.
“The unit where the fire started has been completely engulfed,” Insp Rees said.
“Unfortunately police officers have gone in to do a spot check to make sure nobody was inside and they’ve suffered smoke inhalation. It’s quite serious, they’ve been assessed and treated by paramedics.
“They were transport up to Wollongong hospital and are now being looked after in acute care, they’ve got some airway involvement and the toxic smoke becomes an issue.”
Dozens of emergency services workers attended the scene. Part of Crown Street remained closed at 9.20pm.
