People who "recklessly” drive into floodwaters should be fined, Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast Gareth Ward said.

In a notice of motion in NSW parliament, Mr Ward called on the government to make it illegal for people to drive into floodwaters, thereby risking not only their own lives but those of their rescuers.
“The message simply isn’t getting through," Mr Ward said.
“Every time we see flooding, we see reckless behaviour that unnecessarily puts lives at risk.
“We need to do everything we can to support our emergency services personnel and a fine would act as a financial deterrent to motorists who are considering entering floodwaters.”
Mr Ward said he had previously written to the government recommending this action.
