The 10th annual Leukaemia Foundation Golf Tournament founded by the late Greg Thurling a decade ago is being held this Friday at Wollongong Golf Club. The day starts at 7am and registrations can be made at www.leukaemia.org.au/10LFGT. The 2016 event will be held in honour of Mr Thurling who died on New Year’s Eve after a 15-year battle with chronic myeloid leukaemia.
Mr Thurling was diagnosed in 2001 and when he saw how tough other families in a similar situation were doing it, he approached the Leukaemia Foundation about holding a fundraiser to help them. He had income protection insurance himself and wanted to do something to help others with blood-related diseases, and their families. He and Nina Field organised the first Leukaemia Golf Day in 2006 with the help of AMP and 16 of his clients. It has since raised close to $300,000. The Leukaemia Foundation recently named a room at a Westmead children’s hospital accommodation facility after him.
