TWAS the night before Christmas eve, when all through the city, not a creature was stirring, not even a kitty.

Yes it was a still, spectacular night when the Illawarra Mercury took a phone call from the North Pole asking us to meet Santa Claus on the Mount Keira Summit Park.
Santa said he had a special message he wanted to deliver to the children of the Illawarra.
Initially thinking it was a prank call photographer Robert Peet arrived on the escarpment and sure enough, to his astonishment, there was Santa with a pair of binoculars in hand.
He was surveying the city to see who had been naughty and who had been nice.
Santa said he was going to be arriving in the Illawarra as his first port of call in Australia on Christmas Eve. Sensible Santa.
He said it meant though, the kids of the Illawarra had to be tucked up in bed nice and early because he knows when you are sleeping, he knows when you’re awake.
We can’t thank Santa enough for his surprise and allowing us to capture our wonderful front page image. But there’s a couple of other people we have to thank.
We believe Wollongong Central and Scene to Believe encouraged Santa to make contact with us.
We also are reliably informed Anaconda in Wollongong Central supplies Santa with his binoculars when he is in the Illawarra.
Also a special thank you to Santa’s special helper Bob Goodridge who was on hand on the night to help.
