Lazarus clocked a time of 1:49.0 to edge out stablemate Our Waikiki Beach in the Group 1 feature and will now be aimed towards the Miracle Mile on February 25 where he is expected to start favourite. Purdon told Fairfax Media that he believes Lazarus can go even faster in the Miracle Mile.
The leading horseman won leading mile race last year with Have Faith In Me, who is also expected to feature in this year’s edition.
Inter Dominion champion Smolda and Our Waikiki Beach could give Purdon a record of four pacers in the event.
Meanwhile, New Zealand pacer Tiger Tara could also be headed towards the Miracle Mile.
Trainer Kevin Pizzuto was hopeful his top performer could become his first ever starter in the race.
“He’s a nice horse and feeling well within himself,” Pizzuto said.
“He has been racing well enough over in New Zealand for me to consider aiming him at the Miracle Mile.”
Preludes for the $750,000 Group 1 will be staged at Menangle this Saturday.
