Surely, as a region, we are growing tired of hearing the words “Maldon” and “Dombarton”. The proposed Maldon-Dombarton rail link could unlock so much potential for the Illawarra.
Now, it’s fair to say this region has some good representatives within state and federal governments who do go into bat for the Illawarra. Yet the state and federal governments that they are a part of pay this region lip service more often than not.
It’s time the NSW and federal government delivered on some game-changing projects for this region outside of bypasses. Where is the money for Maldon Dombarton?
We’ve talk about it for years. This project has the ability to transform this region, our state and Federal representatives should be tearing sydney and Canberra apart, shaking premier and Prime Minister by the ankles until the money falls out of their pocket.
Parliamentary secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward was this week talking tough on the issue.
He has vowed to take on Freight Minister Melinda Pavey over the issue, especially after Ms Pavey was quoted recently as saying rail was “not a high priority” for the NSW Government. This region sees it a little differently and Mr Ward has promised to “sort her out”.
“It certainly is a priority and it’s a priority for me,” Mr Ward said.
That should be music to our ears but we also need to hear those words uttered by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. The Maldon-Dombarton project was dealt a blow when Infrastructure Australia recommended against it receiving Federal funding.
Yet we should view that setback as nothing but a red rag to a bull and continue to pour pressure on the Federal Government to think differently.
