Roads across the Illawarra were plunged into gridlock on Thursday afternoon, as the region was pummelled with rain.
Numerous access routes were flooded and closed, as the region’s State Emergency Services crews responded to more than 80 requests for assistance in a two hour period.
Multiple cars were stuck in floodwater across Wollongong, Shellharbour and the Southern Highlands, and crews also attended to several animal rescues especially in the West Dapto and Albion Park area.
In many cases the crews needed to use boats to access those who became trapped after driving into rising waters.
Officials have warned that no drivers or pedestrians should enter floodwaters for any reason.
