Three groups of recreational fishers and a further three individuals were found in possession of 2286 cockles that had been collected from Lake Illawarra.
Infringement notices have been issued for offences including possessing more than the legal bag limit and recreational licensing offences.
Fortunately, all the cockles were returned to the water alive.
Fisheries Officers from the Lake Illawarra district have reminded fishers that the recreational possession limit of cockles is 50 per person and you must hold a current recreational fishing permit when collecting shellfish in NSW.
You can check up on size and bag limits at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au.
