A teenage boy is in a critical condition after his bike and a car collided at Warrawong.

The 18-year-old boy was riding at speed when his bike connected with the front of a car on Minnegang Street, shortly after 12.30pm Thursday.

He had a helmet with him, though police have yet to establish whether this this was secured to his head at the time of impact, Lake Illawarra Sergeant David Kneipp said.

“Basically he’s face-planted into the windscreen of the car,” Sgt Kneipp said.

“He’s lost some teeth.”

The teen suffered a serious head injury. He lay on the roadside as bystanders called paramedics.

Police have not yet found any witnesses to the crash.

The female driver has told police she saw the boy riding south-eastward down Jane Avenue, and brought her car to a stop at the intersection with Minnegang Street, expecting him to pass.

Instead, the bike slammed into the front of her car, the woman has claimed.

The teen was taken by road ambulance to Wollongong Hospital in a serious condition.

His condition has since worsened, to critical.
