The town’s Chamber of Commerce – which runs the event – announced this week that the once-popular race would be held on September 23, instead of May 27, as originally planned.
On the event Facebook page, the decision was put down to “shortfall in funding and a very small volunteer response”.
“Another factor was only nine entries had been received and this is also being addressed,” supporters were told.
The event – first held in 1940 – returned to Portk Kembla’s hilly Wentworth Street from a 25-year hiatus to much fanfare in 2012, and has attracted thousands of spectators and scores of participants in the years since.
