A son of Edwards star bitch Double Twist, Panel Beater showed his trainer staying promise with a dominant victory at Dapto last week over 600m.
Panel Beater clocked a slick 34.37 to win at his first attempt over the journey. The pup by Collison had been competitive over 520m before stepping up in distance, but Edwards felt he wouldn’t be able to take the next step in grade in the sprint.
“There has never been any doubt Panel Beater has a big motor but unfortunately he doesn't possess the early speed needed to be a top grade sprinter,” he told thedogs.com.au.
“But Thursday's win was encouraging because the only gallop he had in the preceding eight days was a 350m trial up the straight. While he had never been tested previously over 600m he actually pulled up in better shape and more relaxed than he has after some of his 520m races.”
Edwards was wary of burning out his promising stayer over the long distances and planned to take a cautious approach with Panel Beater.
