The Crown St bar is known for its wide range of whiskies but three new owners have decided to bump up the beer selection too.
Co-owner Ben Abraham reckons their big beer list – it runs to three pages – could mean they stock more beers than any other bar in the Illawarra.
And he says the list changes around three times a week as new beers come in and replace others.
Abraham is a self-confessed beer geek so he knows craft beer fans are always looking to try something new, rather than sit on the same lager all night.
“Whereas other bars might by a couple of cases of a beer, I typically buy a six-pack,” he says.
“For most of our customers – and I’m the same – it’s about exploration.
“You’re not going to drink 10 of the same beer in a row. You’ll have one beer and then say ‘okay, what else have you got?’.”
Abraham likes to think they’ve got something for everyone – the list starts with a $5 can of Fosters and ends with a $65 imperial stout from Sierra Nevada.
While some might blanch at paying $65 for a beer, Abraham says he’s sold several bottles to beer geeks who split the cost.
Also, he reckons some people are happy to pay a bit more than others for a beer that’s a bit special.
“Some bars think they can’t go over $10 a bottle, but what we’ve found is, for some people price is not the only factor,” he says.
“I want to drink really good beer - if it costs me $14 or $15 but is a real banger, who cares?”
