The 67-year-old man was driving down Central Road about 12.55pm when his car overturned near the corner of Cook Street, coming to rest on its side, its roof crumpled by a power pole.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Norm Rees said the man remained trapped for about 10 minutes while emergency services worked out how to free him, as the driver’s side door was pressed against the ground.
“For some reason he’s lost control of the car, whether because of speed or a medical episode, that’s yet to be determined,” Inspector Rees said. “Fire and Rescue NSW and Ambulance assessed the patient and we worked out the best way to extricate the patient,” he said.
“It seems that he’s lost control and it [the car] has slid and [only] just hit the post, which is a really lucky thing.
“If it slid in any further it would have been a completely different scenario.”
The man was transported to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition for further treatment and assessment.
