Pomelo emerged as one of Markwell’s most promising horses in the autumn after spanking her rivals in a heat of the Provincial series.
She went on to finish a commendable fourth behind Maryore in the event’s final on April 8 before the stable spelled the mare after the run.
Markwell will give Pomelo her first run at this preparation in the TAB.com.au Benchmark 83 (1100m). It will likely be a stepping stone for bigger races this spring.
However, Markwell's racing manager Ross McConville said the stable had no firm target in mind.
“The stable just want to see how she goes tomorrow before deciding anything,” he said. “We wanted to use the claim so Brock [Ryan] will ride. Everything has gone really well since her last run and she has comeback with two jump outs.”
Pomelo has been lumped with 59kgs for her first-up run, but will be aided by Ryan’s 3kg claim in town. The apprentice is yet to taste success in the city. Pomelo – a $5.50 hope with Sportsbet – could help Ryan break his duck.
