Fire crews, including two hazardous materials teams, are working to contain a diesel slick on the water in Wollongong Harbour.
Firefighters were alerted to a diesel slick, measuring about 20 metres by 2 metres, on the harbour about 2pm on Tuesday
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said crews had discovered a “light sheen” on the water, which was possibly residual from nearby roads..
Booms were placed in the water and a HAZMAT boat launched in an effort to mop-up the spillage.
“They [crews] think it’s possibly from a bilge pump from a boat,” the spokeswoman said.
One crew from Wollongong and two HAZMAT teams from Shellharbour were on the scene.
