Wollongong Central General Manager Antony Keenan said the first day of trade for the world class David Jones, food hall and 10 new specialty stores was a huge success.
Mr Keenan said he loved the way people in Wollongong have embraced the changes. And he said the buzz of opening day was continuing into the weekend and across the four day celebration.
Mr Keenan said trade on the first day was so brisk that most retailers reached their full-day trading budgets by noon.

“We are overwhelmed at the response from customers to the launch of the refurbished Gateway building and the mix of specialty retailers now available within the centre,” he said.
“The feedback we have received from customers has been amazing with many people indicating they are proud of what Wollongong has achieved and are enjoying both the look and the new products available in the city centre.

Mr Keenan said the retailers were excited by the response.
“One new international retailer said yesterday marked the company’s highest opening day sales globally and while we knew there was plenty of interest in the new David Jones Food experience, the response to its opening exceeded all expectations,” he said.
“It was exceptionally busy from the moment the doors opened and throughout the entire day. This redevelopment has always been about providing a diverse and engaging shopping experience for Illawarra residents. It’s wonderful to see it come to fruition and watching our city embrace it.”
Mr Keenan said Wollongong Central was offering two hours free parking on weekends.
