Wollongong’s Blake Govers has starred in the Kookaburras dominant win over Pakistan at the International Festival of Hockey in Melbourne on Wednesday night.
The 21-year-old scored a hat-trick as Australian claimed a 9-1 victory in their opening match of the tournament.
“It feels great to get a good win.” Goal scorer Kiran Arunasalam said. “Nine goals is pretty special. We played well. Pakistan play hard so to score nine goals is perfect.”
The team plays New Zealand on Thursday night before facing Japan on Saturday and a potential gold medal match on Sunday.
Later in the evening, the Hockeyroos fell to world number one Netherlands 2-0. Despite the loss, captain Emily Smith was pleased with her team’s performance.
“To stay with them for such a long time was promising, now we’ve got to get a few more goal scoring opportunities and limit there’s which I thought we did quite well.” Smith said.
