The owner of the vehicle, which was parked near his home on the Princes Highway, woke when he heard a noise outside about 2am on October 29.
He went out to investigate and saw a man trying to break into his vehicle.
He disturbed the man, who then ran from the scene.
The matter was reported to Lake Illawarra police and an investigation began.
As a result of the investigation, police on Wednesday charged an 18-year-old man with attempting to steal from a motor vehicle.
The man was given conditional bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court on November 22.
The latest arrest comes after police nabbed at least a dozen people during an operation targeting property theft.
The operation was prompted by a spike in the number of thefts from cars in the Dapto and Koonawarra areas.
Thefts from motor vehicles, stolen credit cards being used to commit paywave frauds and people spotted acting suspiciously near cars have been among a growing number of incidents in Wollongong’s southern suburbs.
Anyone with information on this or similar incidents should call Lake Illawarra police station on 4232 5599.
