The Australian people have spoken and spoken loud and clear.
The majority of people in this country want marriage equality and not even the strongest of ‘No’ campaigners could find a way to reason against that logic.
The message was ‘Yes”. A resounding ‘Yes’.
Right around the country, people gathered on Wednesday morning as the result of the postal poll into marriage equality was delivered.
Overwhelmingly, people voted in favour of equal rights.
Every state in the country delivered a majority verdict in support of marriage equality.
Every state.
In the Illawarra, the result was certainly clear.
The three Illawarra federal electorates voted for change with more than 60 per cent in support across those electorates.
Speaking after Wednesday’s result, the Illawarra’s own Matilda football star Michelle Heyman was not surprised.
Heyman, who was voted the LGBTI Sports Personality of the Year earlier this year, knew her home region would back the yes campaign in.
"I am over the moon for the Illawarra and I had no doubt the Illawarra would be behind the campaign," Heyman said
"Personally, growing up there, I've never had any issues or bullying. It's always been a very safe environment for what I’ve seen and be through. Today is a great day."
The decision has been made. It's now up to our government to make it a reality.
GIVE KINGS ROYAL WELCOME
On Thursday night, the Sydney Kings will be welcomed back into the cauldron of the WIN Entertainment Centre.
This time they bring with them a sworn enemy of the Illawarra Hawks, a former Adelaide 36ers and NBL MVP Jerome Randle.
During last season’s finals campaign Hawks fans almost ripped the roof off the WEC in response to Randle’s comments the Hawks were a “dirty” side.
His welcome to Wollongong is likely to be given a similar treatment by locals fans given he will be wearing the despised purple of the Sydney Kings.
Get along to the WEC and strap yourself in because this promises to be one hell of a ride.
Please give Jerome and the Kings Wollongong’s warmest royal welcome.
