Some students are worried they can’t fit uni into their busy lives or that it’s expensive, and these factors become a barrier to getting started. Brad Carter believes this couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Most UOW courses can be studied part time to fit around other commitments.

“And with all UOW undergraduate courses being Commonwealth supported and all domestic students having access to defer their fees through HECS, these worries should not stop anyone from considering further study.”

UOW has campuses in Wollongong, Bega, Batemans Bay, Moss Vale, Nowra, Loftus and Liverpool.

For many students, having a campus close to their home removes a large barrier to further study.

“I felt the close community on the Batemans Bay campus suited my personality,” said Jamie-Ann, who is studying a Bachelor of Arts, Batemans Bay campus. “It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you come from, because once you start university, you become part of a whole new community.”

Practical skills are important to students who want to graduate ready to launch into their chosen career.

All UOW students have the opportunity to gain practical skills as part of their studies, either through work placements or co-curricular programs.

Chris Hinder, currently studying for his Bachelor of Nursing at UOW, said, “I’ve participated in clinical placements from the first semester and this will continue all the way through my degree, so I really get to test out the degree and see if it is a career I’d like to build on.

“My goal is to be an army nursing officer.”

Domestic student recruitment manager Brad Carter said, “We talk to a lot of students who haven’t studied for many years, and have doubts about their academic ability, but again, this shouldn’t be a barrier. 

“UOW College offers pathway programs that get students ready to succeed at uni, and guarantee entry to UOW on successful completion.”
